Mt Hagen Sing sing

Start here for my introductory blog about our experiences in PNG.

A selection here of some unnamed slides at  sing sings near Mt. Hagen. I will upload a  blog soon about the Mt Hagen area and how I ended up there in 1974. This small selection is to give you an idea of the culture that existed 43 years ago and what we experienced.

A sing sing is held whenever there was something to celebrate and everyone gets their best bilas on.

Mt Hagen wigmen
I know that these slides were taken around the My Hagen area because the mens distinctive wigs are made from human hair. The golden feathers are from the bird of paradise, raggiana paradise. Each tribal area is identified by their traditional bilas

Liberal quantities of pig grease makes the skin glisten.

Arse grasses complete the bilas.

On several occasion there were mostly likely only 3 Europeans there amongst hundreds of locals. More about our visits to the countryside and various sing sings in later blogs.
